"Return To Aegos: Another journey into the Greek Sun" by May Panayi - IHIBRP 3-Star Book R

Headline

Overview: A young woman’s search for her estranged family takes her home to a romantic island-hopping adventure among the beautiful Greek Isles.

Told with an intimate knowledge of Greece’s extensive history, unique landmarks, and ancient traditions—Author May Panayi sweeps her readers away on a tour of the Old Country’s magnificent island jewels in the second chapter of her holiday romance/travel series, “Return to Aegos”.

Panayi’s plotline contains elaborate descriptions of her main protagonist’s travels on the mainland and the islands of Greece. We follow her primary character, Ella, as she makes a return journey to both new and familiar locations in order to fulfill her desire to move to her ancestral home on the isle of Aegos and completes her search for her estranged sister. The author imbues Ella with an extensive knowledgeability of the country’s culture and traditions, making readers feel completely welcome in her element. Ella’s charm and ease in her communications with the locals as well as her understanding of their everyday lives gives readers a sense of hominess and warmth as she dispenses detailed accounts of the local landmarks and their history.

In the beginning of this novel, the protagonist’s story does get somewhat lost in the author’s elaborate and overzealous writing style. Panayi’s plotline elaborates a bit too much on lengthy, descriptive narratives about so many incidentals—such as the food Ella consumes, right down to the number of lemon wedges on her plate. However, the appeal of a well-conceived cast and story eventually forms a sound tale that makes up for the author’s extensive passages. Readers who are unfamiliar with Greece’s beautiful islands and its culture may find enjoyment in the author’s passionately detailed narratives about the local people, landmarks, restaurants, and traditions, while others may find frustration weeding out this warm and genuine family reunion/holiday romance.

All in all, Panayi’s knowledge of Greece is truly admirable, and one can sense her tremendous love for this ancient country and it’s people. Although readers may find it a bit difficult to extract what the author intended to be a family reunification tale/destination romance from within the framework of what is essentially a richly detailed travelogue, the story does come together in the end.

I recommend this book to readers who might be interested in the history, culture, and traditions of Greece, but the actual romance of this tale does get lost in the copious details of this book. “Return to Aegos” may be enjoyed as a stand-alone read, or as part of Panayi’s holiday romance/travelogue series.
