A Medieval Asian-Style Romance Ruled By Fate!
Kate Kier’s “Nyssa (Goddess of War Series Book 1)” is a medieval Asian-style romance about a rebellious and independent young woman who is stripped from her family by the conquering army of a cruel and ambitious warlord determined to unite his country under one regime—his.
Kier’s plotline reads much like Disney’s “Mulan” for the over-18 crowd, with Nyssa posing as a man and joining the ranks of the conquering Lord Odyn Rygard in order to save her brother from being shanghaied. When Nyssa’s true identity is exposed by Odyn’s General, Astarin Roeseer, she is doomed to become a concubine for the very man she knows caused the death of her father. In typical romance-fashion, Nyssa’s keen wit and defiant nature cause both men to lust after her with varying measures of restraint.
While Kier’s story seems to be based on Japanese lore about shoguns, samurai, and comfort-women, and follows the typical cat-and-mouse game of most romance novels, her characters are quite engaging and motivated by a singular purpose. As the story progresses, there are plenty of discoveries to be made… and lovers to be brought together. Romance readers will enjoy this Asian-style tale filled with colorful scenes depicting castles and gardens that frame a cast of characters who are caught up in a fateful journey that quickly spins out of control.
