5 Star IHIBRP Book Review: “Dorothea’s Advice for the Lovelorn” by Cherie Mitchell

A Captivating Sweet Romance You’ll Never Forget!

Dorothea is a young Sydney urbanite with a glittering personality and a remarkable knack for making new friends. But, she experiences a setback in her life when she suddenly loses her job and her long-time boyfriend. The boyfriend issue can be put on hold, but Dorothea is desperate to make ends meet, and she’ll take any job that comes along—even if her qualifications might be somewhat lacking. That’s why she ends up as an Agony-Aunt (the Australian version of an advice columnist) for a local newspaper. From the start, Dorothea’s a big hit with her editor. The only problem is… she’s not the one giving the advice.

Author Cherie Mitchell lines up a delightful cast of characters in “Dorothea’s Advice for the Lovelorn”. Each has their share of problems to resolve; the comforting and wise Italian grandmother, Nona, who has a secret past unknown to her family members; the do-or-die Dorothea who would do anything both in and out of her means for her friends and family; the less than charming ex-boyfriend (We won’t concentrate on him too much!); the young couple across the hall who are newly in love and embarking on a new relationship; the local grocer who must return home to India to care for his ailing mother but has no one to care for his 24-hour market; the lost kitty just trying to find his way back home; and the handsome young man who judges Dorothea too harshly and cannot possibly be considered as a love interest (Or, can he?). All come together to form a cohesive collective around Dorothea, enriching her daily life and greatly enhancing this sweet romance read.

“Dorothea’s Advice for the Lovelorn” is a fun and absorbing story that will capture one’s heart from the very start. As Dorothea meets life head-on, she jumbles relationships, stresses her meager finances, and shoves herself into cat-sitting duties even though pets are banned from her apartment complex. All the while, however, she maintains close contact with her beloved Nona whose sage advice is dished out to a granddaughter eager to learn all she can from her remarkable life experiences.

The plotline of “Dorothea’s Advice for the Lovelorn” shines best when Nona unwittingly helps respond to Dorothea’s quickly-growing advice column and supports her in making some difficult life choices, but the story is consistent and fascinating all the way through. Humor, fun, friends, family, and the hope of new love lie in wait in this bright and energetic romance tale. Congratulations to the author on this IHIBRP 5 Star Recommended Read!
