5 Star IHIBRP Book Review: “Eagle in the Fridge” by Zenta Brice

A Powerful Family Saga & Political Thriller!

Zenta Brice draws on her own personal experiences in this powerful political thriller about a Latvian family suffering the mounting tensions associated with that country’s fight for independence during the breakup of the USSR in the Gorbachev era.

Even as a nation struggles with the daily trials of living under an oppressive government regime that is desperate to secure a union falling apart at the seams and a collapsing economy, Brice brings a more intimate view of a family struggling to make ends meet. Through Rasa and her family, Brice weaves an intricate and detailed plotline of everyday familial life against the backdrop of history. Her colorful characters are fascinating and complete, and one gets the feeling they could step from the pages of the novel at any time to personally relate their story. Naturally, the dialogue in this script reflects the ethnicity of her characters, complete with foul language, bad grammar, and colloquial inflections, giving the reader a sense that they are part of the story and experiencing it in the actual moment. With compelling writing, sensitive issues, and a deep concentration on family, Brice pulls us into her story. We suffer the trials and tribulations of her particularly strong female lead, Rasa, as much as we rejoice in the triumphs of her life, that of her family members, and the lives of her compatriots.

“Eagle in the Fridge” is a remarkable work that would lend itself well as an accompaniment to a history course on 1987 Latvia, the USSR, and/or communism during the Gorbachev era. As an historian, I highly recommend this novel for anyone studying this period of history… and as an author, for anyone who enjoys a great family saga. Congratulations to the author on this IHIBRP 5 Star Recommended Read!
