4 Star IHIBRP Book Review: “Taken (The Redskull Invasion Book 1)” by Mel Corbett

An Alien Invasion Story!

How frightened would you be if, one day, you awakened to a full-fledged alien invasion? Would you hunker down and stay where you are, or would you go away to some safe house out of the city? What supplies would you need, and would they last long enough to withstand an all–out war on humanity? This is the premise of Mel Corbett’s “Taken (The Redskull Invasion Book 1)”.

“Taken” is a typical alien invasion spectacle where spacecraft suddenly show up one day and panicked humans are sent scurrying to find hiding places far from urban centers. Corbett’s tale delves into not just one person’s story, but a number of individual scenarios whereby a group of characters—along with their families/friends—desperately try to get out of harm’s way before they’re captured by the machines. Corbett’s plotline does move forward at a good pace, but her characters could do with some further development to make them more memorable and endearing.

By building up the horror of the pursuit without showing the actual predator until the very last minute—a Hitchcock ploy, Corbett’s work inspires a certain degree of mystery and terror. As a result, the reader is propelled through this story wondering exactly who—or what—is responsible for all this mayhem. Fast-paced scene-switches ensure that each facet of this tale comes together to provide an overall look at how human beings react in times of crises, and an end-of-story cliffhanger guarantees the continuance of this Sci-Fi survival adventure, leaving readers anticipating the arrival of Corbett’s next chapter of The Redskull series.
