4 Star IHIBRP Review: “Mercy … It Was Never About Me” by Gale Nicolai

A Tremendous Story of Survival and Triumph!

How would you feel if you grew up knowing that you were never wanted … that you lived your life always out of place … that you never really belonged to the life you were occupying? In “Mercy … It Was Never About Me”, Author Gale Nicolai writes a poignant and intimate autobiography about her own life that is peppered with a good deal of wisdom, humor, and life-lessons.

Nicolai grew up in the United States during the fast-paced and changeable eras of the 60’s and 70’s, and I felt an instant connection to her experiences, many of which paralleled so much of my own life and that of my friends and family. Her writing style is unconventional, but her story more than makes up for the grammatical faux-pas, and a connected reader can easily devour this tale in a single evening. From her loss of innocence at such a young age, to her Catholic upbringing (Oh, the nun stories were so familiar … and funny!), and from her surprising decision to join the military to her more astonishing decision to marry THAT guy, Nicolai gracefully manages to find humor and optimism in the most tragic of circumstances. It is her fortitude and persistence, however, that see her through her most extreme challenges—and there are many. Drug-addiction, domestic abuse, homelessness, and finally redemption—Nicolai’s personal journey mirrors that of so many women who ventured through these—and empowering—decades, but her ultimate triumph is her candor in revealing her tremendous story of survival in “Mercy … It Was Never About Me”. Nicely done, Gale Nicolai! Nicely done—“I’m just saying”!
