Everything Old Is New Again—The Importance Retro-Promos!

Has it been a while since you’ published your latest work? Statistics show that the most successful Indie authors are those who publish most frequently and on a consistent basis. As authors release books on a regular basis (no more than a year or two apart for major novels, especially if they’re in a series), they’re much more likely to stay in the public eye and draw sales to their books across the spectrum. But, what if it’s been awhile—perhaps even a few years—since you’ve published, and you feel as though readers have forgotten about your book? What if sales on your current work are starting to run dry? Worse... What if your next major novel has been delayed for some reason and is still months, or perhaps years, away from completion? Above all, don’t lose hope... There’s a simple solution to help you stay in the center of the Readers’ Arena. If you have an earlier publication that might not have made it to great heights of fame and glory, an old draft that’s drifted off to the wayside and is standing in the shadows—squirreled away in a raggedy old box up in your attic, or a few pieces of teen poetry secreted in an old diary or journal, why not run on the heels of your latest gem and strut your stuff with a retro-promo—A renewed promotional effort on a past release, or the publication and promotion of a long-neglected work? Most Indie authors are so focused on looking forward toward future releases and pressing on in their careers. Oftentimes, they’ve neglected those lost jewels that have been scattered and lost by the wayside. But, it’s those little pearls of wisdom that may yet have the potential to reap great rewards if you’re willing to polish them and get them ready to take their place in the crown. Just think—Calling readers’ attention to a past publication that’s thus far received little or no attention can do much to promote your career as an established Indie author. Promoting a neglected past work to readers who have focused in on your latest publication can be just the spark you need to ignite sales on this and other items you may currently be offering, especially if your story or poetry reaches across new genres to readers with more diverse interests. It can also seal your position in the Indie community as a successful multi-genre author. Likewise, with a little fine tuning, your “lost” poetry collection, children’s story, short-stories, and any other writings you may have set down prior to your more current work(s), could—with a little spit and polish—be your stars-in-the-making. At minimum, these smaller volumes, which can be quickly and easily released as Ebooks, could just get you back in front of readers while they’re still savoring your latest piece. Let’s face it, readers often flock to a particular author when they’re appreciative of their creativity and ability to draw them into a story. They fall in love with your characters, your writing style, your descriptive passages, and your dialogue... More importantly, they develop a bound relationship with you as one of their favorite authors. Why shouldn’t they take a look at your other works? So, take advantage of your current success... Find those old composition books, journals, pieces of scrap paper and get them published. Dust off those back-of-the-shelf publications and start expanding your promotional campaigns to include all your writings—new and old. After all, like an old pair of boots spruced up with a lovely bunch of flowers, everything old is new again, and your next great success could be waiting just around the corner!

JB Richards is an historian and international multi-award-winning Amazon, Goodreads, and Xlibris author. She holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and History. Richards is the founder and driving force behind the Indies Helping Indies Book Review Project (IHIBRP)—which she created and initiated in April 2017 to provide qualifying Indie authors with high-quality book reviews and free promotional services and the Indieverse Resource Library (IRL)—an online resource library that features articles, blogs, and services to support and educate Indie authors and readers. Richards is also the founder of the Indie Fabs—a team of authors equally dedicated to offering free assistance, guidance, and support to Indie (independent) authors with the aim of building strong bonds of cooperation and fellowship within the Indie community. She has been a member of the Women Fiction Writers Association (WFWA) and The International Women’s Writing Guild (IWWG) since 2016.

Richards’ fantasy tale, “The Dragon’s Heir”, is included in an award-winning adult fairytale anthology called “Once Upon a Fabulous Time” that was published in December 2017. Her multi-award-winning debut novel, "Miriamne the Magdala"—Grand Prize Winner of the 2017 Golden Quill Award—was published in 2015 after more than 20 years of extensive research into the lives and times of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. “The First Christmas: A Yeshua and Miri Novel Series Short” was released in December 2017, and her upcoming sequel, “Yeshua the Christ: The Silk Road”, is due for publication in 2018. She is currently developing a fantasy series called “The Dragon’s Heir” along with a spin-off series from The Yeshua and Miri novels called “Heaven’s Guard” which are slated for release in 2019. Her writing, reviews, and blogs are regularly featured several magazines, including Golden Box Books Publishing Magazine and Indie Publishing News.

Richards is a lifelong resident of Manchester, New Hampshire, where she resides with her husband, Daniel, her son, Matthew, and her two dogs, Monty and Ayden.
