Beguiling—and at the same time terrifying—“The Beekeeper’s Daughter” is a riveting masterpiece that will stand the test of time!
Don’t get me wrong, but I’m usually not one for period romances, having had my fill of Jane Austin, the Bronte sisters, and Charles Dickens when I studied Classical English Literature with Sister Renee in college. Having made this one point perfectly clear, I must now do an about face and reverse my opinion in regard this genre, all because of Author Jane Jordan’s exceptional novel, “The Beekeepers Daughter”. This keenly descriptive, breathtaking mystery-romance epic would feel very much at home sitting on a library shelf wedged between “Pride and Prejudice”, “Wuthering Heights”, and “Great Expectations”. Yes, Sister Renee, it’s that good! Add the darkness, paranormal activity, and suspense that Jordan infuses into her tale of two lovers seemingly fated to spend their lives apart, and you’ll see echoes of Daphne de Maurier’s “Rebecca”—so well portrayed in Alfred Hitchcock’s award-winning movie of the same title.
Although Author Jane Jordan paints a picture of gorgeous vistas in “The Beekeeper’s Daughter” with sparkling rivers, endless fields of wildflowers, and craggy outcrops that look out over a foaming sea, she immerses her reader into a drama just chock-full of disturbing themes. Not for the faint of heart, Jordan’s novel begins with the memory of a witch trial and a young woman who vows vengeance against the local Lord—a spurned ex-suitor—as she mercilessly burns at the stake. This act ties two families together in an unnatural bond affecting future generations.
Fast-forward those few generations to the 1860’s, and we meet Annabel Taylor, only daughter of Lilith and Josiah—the Beekeeper. Annabel’s life is without worry and carefree until her parents decide to provide her with an education. At school, this free spirit, who seems destined to be her teacher’s least favorite student, meets Jevan Wenham, the blacksmith’s son. After the usual teasing and tussling back and forth for control of the relationship, these two rowdy children develop a fast-friendship and as they grow up, they predictably fall in love. It is a love, however, that is oftentimes prone to jealousy and violence—as many relationships of this era seem prone to be. And when Jevan returns from a four-year absence, he finds the love of his life stolen by the likes of Alex Saltonstall, local Lord Cerberus Saltonstall’s only son and heir. Here is where Jordan picks up the pace of this story, and the reader is taken through one heartbreaking tragedy after another.
A series of earth-shattering revelations and unspeakable events—including a child murder, an unjustified arrest, a forced marriage, and a land-swindling deal—ultimately leads to great chaos for the key players in this riveting tale, resulting in a bloodthirsty feast of violence, murder, and revenge. Beguiling—and at the same time terrifying—“The Beekeeper’s Daughter” is a riveting masterpiece that will stand the test of time!
